Reflection Post

I have taken a women and gender studies class before, and due to the instructor did not enjoy the class, therefore I was hesitant to take this class; I'm so glad I did. This class has changed the way I look at everything around me; I cannot look at an advertisement, watch a television show or listen to a song without analyzing and critiquing it; its amazing to me how oblivious I was to this before, especially in TV shows that I watch on a regular basis; I enjoy this new way of looking at things.
I have enjoyed all aspects of this class. The work has correlated well with the material; I especially believe this blog was helpful, because it made us apply what we learned in the class. I also enjoyed the videos we watched; not only were they helpful, but also relevant and educational - its much easier to learn a concept when you are shown different examples of it. I have learned a lot, and I am especially proud of my work in this class. I have never considered myself a strong writer, but I am very proud of and did very well on my papers in this class. A big part of this was the workshops. At first I had no desire to have my papers workshopped, but after having it done on the second essay, I jumped at the chance to have my final essay workshopped. The workshop is so helpful, and gives you a lot of insight. Overall, it was a great experience for my Junior composition class.

  1. hey heather,
I understand your hesitance towards the class because I had a similar experience with my womens studies class. In my womans studies class everything was one sided and extremely liberal. Everyone wanted to constantly debate and argue and I found the class to be frustrating, but this class was different. I felt like this class was more open minded and considerate of all the possible sides and ideas. I liked how we looked at things from all different points of view and then got to write our papers with our personal opinions worked in. I also agree with you in that this class was helpful and I will most likely take what I learned in this class and apply it to the rest of my writing from here on out.

  2. I was very hesitant to take this class as well because I was afraid that my opinions would be different than others’. I was very comfortable in this class and the setting Megan created. I ended up looking forward to our discussions and what movie we would be watching or discussing. I really loved the documentary on the woman with the disability that we watching. I also like the movie about the underground balls. This class opened my mind up to a lot of things, and I was able to see movies that I would otherwise not watch on my own. I like taking classes like this because it allows you to form your own opinions based off of the new knowledge that is gained in the classroom.

I also agree that the workshops were a great idea. I liked having my first paper workshopped. I felt like it really helped my put all of my ideas together. Sometimes it is just really helpful to get the opinions of the people in the classroom. It helped me make my paper better than what it had been before I had had it worked on. It was nice to just have that done.
